Panaxia

At Ano Kalamonas you will find the valley of butterflies, where is located the Panaxia biotope. It’s the only natural forest of Liquidambar orientalis in Europe and hosts a nocturnal moth, Panaxia Quadripunctaria or Jersey tiger butterfly. At their last phase of life, butterflies have to preserve energy, from their previous lives as caterpillars, so you will find thousands of them resting on the trees. That happens from the last days of May until September ending when butterflies move there for their final stage of life and to reproduce.
